MMA in Acrylic Monomer — Myth vs Fact
There is a lot of misinformation within the nail industry about how to identify MMA (Methyl Methacrylate) in acrylic monomer.
Can you identify MMA by looking at a client's nails?
No. Lifting, yellowing, discolouration, cracking or other service breakdown does not prove that MMA has been used.
Does lifting indicate MMA?
No. Lifting can occur for many reasons, including nail preparation, contamination, product-to-skin contact, incorrect liquid-to-powder ratio, application technique and mechanical stress. MMA has historically been associated with very strong adhesion, so lifting itself is certainly not a reliable indicator.
Does yellowing or discolouration indicate MMA?
No. Discolouration can result from pigments, staining, UV exposure, contamination, chemicals, smoking, incompatible products and other environmental or application factors. It cannot be used to identify MMA.
What about the smell?
Odour isn't a reliable test either. Professional EMA-based acrylic monomers also have a strong and distinctive odour. You cannot determine the chemical composition of a monomer simply by smelling it.
So how do you actually determine whether a monomer contains MMA?
Through the product's formulation and safety documentation and, where independent confirmation is required, appropriate chemical laboratory analysis — not by visually examining an acrylic enhancement.

Making an allegation that a nail technician is using MMA based solely on lifting, discolouration, odour or the appearance of a client's nails is not a reliable method of identifying MMA.
